Beaufort City Hall

To reduce operating costs, the City of Beaufort partnered with Alder Energy Systems LLC to complete five industrial solar panel system installations that will produce 365.5 MWh of solar energy annually. Investing in renewable energy will help the City of Beaufort promote sustainability by becoming an independent power producer and help citizens save money on utility bills.

Solar Energy Continues to Rise

Over the past decade, commercial solar systems have seen remarkable growth as the benefits have become incredibly appealing to business owners. Approximately 88.9 gigawatts (GW) of solar photovoltaic capacity have been installed in the United States since 2020, which is enough reusable energy to power 16.4 million homes. With the rise of solar energy has come the rise of community solar farms as a means of making reusable energy more accessible for all.

People who install solar panels or subscribe to community solar farms can save up to 30% on their monthly utility bills. Businesses who instated clean energy initiatives found that solar panels pay for themselves in approximately four years and can last anywhere from 25-30 years, providing long-term benefits and savings

System Specifications

The city of Beaufort made use of available roof space by installing solar systems across five different buildings: two fire stations, the Public Works building, the police station, the courthouse, and Beaufort City Hall. Their systems combined include 876 panels that produce 365.5 MWh of energy annually, and they were installed facing east and west.

Taking Steps Towards Sustainability

In addition to creating community solar opportunities for the City of Beaufort, Alder teamed up with SmartPower and Solarize South Carolina to host workshops and educational sessions to provide information and resources about solar energy and sustainability to residents and how residential solar can help reduce energy bills and reduce their carbon footprint. Overall, the citizens are very supportive of solar energy and the switch to clean energy.

Beaufort is one of many cities in South Carolina to implement a significant solar power initiative and take the steps to educate its citizens about the benefits of solar energy. The City of Beaufort can also take advantage of state and federal incentives.
